A Conversation about Defending International Justice (6 August 2026)

United Staff for Gaza marked World Humanitarian Day 2026 with an online observance on the eve of the day itself. A hundred colleagues participated. The observance was hosted by Jamie McGoldrick, former Humanitarian Coordinator in Palestine, and featured reflections from Bushra Khalidi, the Global Humanitarian Policy Lead at Oxfam, and Ramadan Al-Omari, a former long-time member of UNRWA staff. We observed a moment of silence in tribute to colleagues killed in Gaza and elsewhere and benefited from a short guided session of community care. It was a moving expression of solidarity and shared humanity.

The EU is Israel's largest trading partner and portrays itself as a defender of human rights around the world. Although an EU review has determined that Israel is in breach of Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, the Union has failed time and again to agree meaningful measures to defend Palestinian rights and hold Israel to account. United Staff for Gaza convened a spirited discussion about the EU's obligations and heard from remarkable advocates.

Amid wanton disregard for international law and the human right of Palestinians, United Staff for Gaza convened a timely discussion about defending international justice. We heard insights from Mona Ali Khalil, a former a Senior Legal Affairs Officer, Margaret Satterthwaite, the Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, Alison Smith, the Executive Director of the Coalition for the International Criminal Court, and Michael Lynk, the former Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Palestine. Colleagues engaged in a lively Q&A.

UN Staff for Gaza mobilized for World Humanitarian Day, on Tuesday, 19 August 2025

Members of United Nations Staff and related personnel gathered at 5pm Eastern Time (USA), at the statue of Non-Violence (also known as The Knotted Gun) on the premises of United Nations Headquarters in New York. They paid tribute to the 346 members of United Nations personnel, and 162 other humanitarians, confirmed killed in the Gaza Strip since October 2023.

They expressed solidarity with United Nations personnel and other humanitarians on the ground, who were working in unspeakable conditions. They reaffirmed the urging by United Nations leadership for immediate, unobstructed humanitarian access and an immediate ceasefire.

The film told the story of Dr. Younis, a devoted father and grandfather, who led an urgent campaign to vaccinate 600,000 children against polio in the midst of the war in Gaza. Delivering vaccines in an active war zone was portrayed as one of the most complex and urgent challenges faced by humanitarian workers, demanding extraordinary skills, courage and resilience.

Against the backdrop of destroyed health, water and sanitation infrastructure, over 80 per cent damaged since October 2023, the documentary showed how Dr. Younis and his team persevered through security threats, logistical obstacles and limited access to health services to protect vulnerable children.

More than a story of vaccination, Gaza’s Silent Threat stood as a powerful testament to the impact of war on children’s health and a tribute to the courage of families and humanitarian workers striving to survive and care for one another in the most fragile of circumstances.

The screening lasted 30 minutes, followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, our colleague Maria Fernanda Lauret.

The UNOG Staff Union, with United Staff for Gaza's support, hosted an online townhall featuring Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Palestine, and Andrew Gilmour, Chair of United Staff for Gaza and former ASG for Human Rights.

Colleagues in New York gathered for a screening of “Gaza’s Silent Threat”, a short documentary by UNICEF, on Thursday 28 August 2025

Together, we filled about 45 seats in the chamber, while other colleagues followed the proceedings on UN Web TV.

It was not an easy session to observe, but it was essential that it was witnessed on behalf of civilians in Palestine.

UNRWA USA 5K Run for Gaza (12 October)

United Staff Staff for Gaza joined UNRWA USA's 5km solidarity run in New York to raise funds for Gaza's children. We had a dozen-strong team and raised nearly $10k. Thousands of people took part.

A conversation about the situation in Gaza with Mary Robinson and Helen Clark (9 October 205)

📅 We had an insightful and inspiring conversation with Mary Robinson and Helen Clark on 9 October.

Robinson and Clark are luminaries of the United Nations and strong advocates for Palestine and respect for international law. They travelled to Rafah in August, witnessing first-hand Israel's policy of starvation. They qualified the situation as a genocide and have called for firm measures to halt it, including in high-level UN forums.

Robinson was President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Clark has served as Prime Minister of New Zealand and Administrator of UNDP. Both are now members of The Elders.

Training by Bystander No More

United Staff for Gaza collaborated with Bystanders No More, a volunteer-led NGO that, drawing on expertise from the field of social psychology, trains people to become persuasive advocates for the human rights of Palestinians.

Some 140 United4Gaza colleagues participated and we were joined by the Acting Director of Communications of UNRWA who shared insight as well. It was a beneficial training opportunity.

In Conversation with No Tech for Apartheid & No Azure for Apartheid

United Staff for Gaza hosted a presentation and exchange with representatives of No Tech for Apartheid and No Azure for Apartheid, two worker-led campaigns within Amazon, Google, and Microsoft that advocate against the complicity of those companies in violating the human rights of Palestinians. All three companies are listed in UN reports as involved in gross violations of human rights.

About 100 colleagues participated. It was shocking to learn about the myriad ways in which, it appears, the aforementioned companies are knowingly and deliberately involved in the commission of atrocity crimes; but it was inspiring to see conscientious (ex-)employees stand up for human rights and achieve change for the better.
